Re: Commissions

This year I learned that besides the tax I already pay for my self-employment income (what my commissions are considered), there's an additional fee I have to pay to my city (called BIRT).I wasn't aware of this, and was never told by tax preparers that have helped me the past 5 years I've been reporting my commissions income.Long story short, I ended up owing a large chunk of money to the IRS, most of it due to late fees. Not only that, but there's been a BIRT tax hike this year.

After doing estimates, I don't make enough in commissions to justify paying this chunk of change after. It doubles my city taxes, and I'm only a minimum wage worker.Commissions were my supplemental income, and has been used in emergencies and as extra pocket money. Unfortunately continuing them will just hurt me financially.

I'm saddened to do this, but as fucked up as it is to say, I can't afford to do commissions (the thing I'm doing to be able to make extra money). Maybe I'll do one set slot a year, just under the amount I'd have to report. Or hopefully the BIRT tax hike will ease up.

It's hard enough being an artist with generative AI prevalent, but now my city's tax laws have taken away my other means of income. I thank anyone who's ever supported and gotten a commission from me the past years. It's a privilege that I was able to to do it in the first place.
